The Accra-born midfielder spoke after helping the Red Bulls secure a 2-0 victory over Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami alongside compatriot Ronald Donkor. Sofo made his 24th regular-season appearance in the win, continuing an impressive campaign in Major League Soccer that has raised hopes of international recognition.
The midfielder said he was delighted to see Donkor earn his first Ghana call-up in September but insisted his priority was to keep performing consistently.
“Honestly, it was a big feeling to see my brother called up,” Sofo told Footy-Africa. “But for me, I try to control what I can control, which is keeping performing week in, week out. The rest is not in my hands. Let’s see what happens,” he added.
Sofo developed at Mali’s JMG Academy before beginning his professional career with Guidars FC. He joined New York Red Bulls II on loan in 2023 and signed a first-team contract in September 2024.
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Somalia in November could provide Ghana with another opportunity to assess their options as Sofo continues to push for international recognition.
