Brentford have no intention of sending Nigerian defender Benjamin Fredrick out on loan in January, despite his lack of first-team appearances this season, Africafoot understands.
Fredrick was promoted to Brentford’s senior squad ahead of the current campaign but is yet to make his first-team debut, prompting speculation that a temporary move could be considered when the January transfer window opens.
However, a source close to the player told Africafoot that Brentford head coach Keith Andrews trusts the defender and has made it clear that he is not available for loan.
“The coach trusts him and has consistently told him that he is not available for loan,” the source said.
“The plan is for him to keep improving and working hard with the group. There are still many games to be played, and hopefully he will get his chance.”
The source added that Brentford are not currently considering a loan departure for Fredrick and that the player has not asked to leave the club in January.
Injury interrupted Fredrick’s progress
Fredrick joined Brentford from Nigerian academy Simonben FC and impressed during his early development, earning recognition as the club’s Under-23 Player of the Year.
His progress led to a loan move to Belgian side Dender, where he was expected to gain further senior experience.
The defender also established himself in the Nigeria national team setup before a knee injury disrupted his momentum and ruled him out for the remainder of last season.
His promotion to Brentford’s first-team squad ahead of the new campaign marked another step forward, although he is still waiting for an opportunity to make his senior debut for the Premier League club.
Despite the lack of competitive minutes, Brentford appear keen to continue his development within their own environment rather than send him elsewhere in January.
The club’s position suggests they remain confident in Fredrick’s potential and believe he can benefit from training alongside the senior squad while waiting for his opportunity.
With much of the season still to come, the 21-year-old will hope to convince Andrews that he is ready for first-team football as he looks to resume his progress following last season’s injury setback.
