The Ivorian teenager’s latest achievement recalls Obafemi Martins’ exploits and the young African players who have made their mark in Europe’s elite club competition.

Yan Diomande has added another chapter to the story of African talent in the UEFA Champions League, with his latest performance drawing comparisons with one of Nigeria’s former attacking stars.

The 19-year-old Ivory Coast winger scored and provided an assist in Real Madrid’s 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig on 21 October 2026. Aged 19 years and 341 days, he became the youngest African player to score and assist in a Champions League match since Nigeria’s Obafemi Martins achieved the feat for Inter Milan against Arsenal in September 2003, according to reports citing Opta.

Diomande’s achievement is distinct from the record for the youngest players to score in the competition, which is determined by their age when they find the net. Nevertheless, his performance offers a timely opportunity to revisit the African players who found the net in the Champions League before their 20th birthdays.

Here are some of the youngest.

7. Christian Kofane (19 years, 67 days)

Cameroon forward Christian Kofane also features among the young African players to score in the competition.

He found the net for Bayer Leverkusen against PSV Eindhoven on 1 October 2025, aged 19 years and 67 days, according to the reported age for that goal.

His inclusion highlights the continued emergence of young African forwards in European football.

6. Nwankwo Kanu (18 years, 226 days)

Nwankwo Kanu scored for Ajax against Bayern Munich on 15 March 1995, beginning his Champions League scoring story as an 18-year-old.

Kanu also holds a separate place in the competition’s history. At 18 years and 296 days, he became the youngest player to win the Champions League when Ajax defeated AC Milan in the 1995 final. He came on as a second-half substitute in the final.

After helping Ajax lift the trophy, Kanu moved to Inter Milan in 1996 before joining Arsenal in 1999. His career subsequently brought further success in English football, cementing his status as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated players.

His legacy now provides an interesting point of comparison with Ilenikhena, who reportedly surpassed Kanu’s record for the youngest African player to reach 15 Champions League appearances.

5. Pascal Feindouno (18 years, 206 days)

Guinea international Pascal Feindouno scored for Bordeaux against Sparta Prague on 21 September 1999, becoming one of the African players to find the net in the Champions League before turning 19.

Known for his technical ability and attacking creativity, Feindouno enjoyed a career across several European leagues and became an important figure for Guinea’s national team.

4. Obafemi Martins (18 years, 142 days)

Obafemi Martins opened his Champions League scoring account for Inter Milan against Bayer Leverkusen on 19 March 2003.

The Nigerian forward would produce another memorable European performance later that year, scoring and assisting against Arsenal in September. That achievement provides a historical connection to Diomande, whose recent goal-and-assist performance has revived interest in Martins’ exploits.

Martins’ pace and direct attacking style made him one of Nigeria’s most recognisable forwards during his time in European football.

3. Samuel Kuffour (18 years, 60 days)

Samuel Kuffour was another young Ghanaian to make an early impression in the Champions League. The defender scored for Bayern Munich against Spartak Moscow in November 1994, demonstrating that African teenagers could make an impact at both ends of the pitch.

Kuffour later became a key figure for Bayern, helping the German club win the Champions League in 2001.

2. Peter Ofori-Quaye (17 years, 194 days)

Peter Ofori-Quaye made Champions League history for Olympiacos against Rosenborg on 1 October 1997.

The Ghanaian forward scored at 17 years and 194 days, becoming the competition’s youngest goalscorer at the time. His record stood for more than two decades before Barcelona’s Ansu Fati broke it in 2019.

Ofori-Quaye’s achievement remains one of the defining moments in the history of Ghanaian football in Europe.

1. George Ilenikhena (17 years, 119 days)

George Ilenikhena announced himself on the European stage with a dramatic late winner for Royal Antwerp against Barcelona on 13 December 2023.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Ilenikhena struck in the 92nd minute to secure a memorable 3-2 victory. At 17 years and 119 days, he became one of the youngest goalscorers in Champions League history.

The forward has also made his mark through consistency at a young age. In January 2026, he reportedly surpassed Nwankwo Kanu’s record to become the youngest African player to reach 15 Champions League appearances, doing so at 19 years and 157 days.

Ilenikhena has represented France at youth level, making him a notable case in any ranking of African-born players. For this list, his Nigerian birthplace is the basis for inclusion.
