Nigerian forward Tolu Arokodare during an interview with Africafoot says Ajax’s ambition to return to the top of Dutch football played a key role in his decision to join the club on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Arokodare revealed that conversations with Ajax technical figure Jordi Cruyff and the club’s head coach convinced him that the Amsterdam side offered the right environment to rebuild his career and contribute to an ambitious project.
The forward, who previously enjoyed a productive spell in Belgium with KRC Genk, said his familiarity with Dutch football was less important than the club’s vision and determination to reclaim its position among Europe’s leading sides.
“I was pretty interested and I like the project and something that I wanted to join and work and build and take the club back to the top,” Arokodare exclusively told Africafoot.
“They’re trying to take Ajax back to the usual spot, the position which is number one spot, and obviously the previous seasons have not been the greatest. So when I heard about the project, it’s something that I was very interested in.”
Ajax ambition sways Arokodare
The Nigerian international explained that his understanding of the league was already established through previous friendly matches against Dutch teams, making the club’s ambitions the decisive factor in his move.
“I think the league is something that I was a little bit familiar with because I’ve had some friendly games against some teams before, and it’s pretty similar to the Belgian league,” he said.
His comments underline the importance of Ajax’s rebuilding plans in persuading him to choose the Dutch giants after attracting interest from other clubs.
Arokodare had been linked with Turkish sides Besiktas and Trabzonspor, as well as Italian club Fiorentina, before opting for a move to Amsterdam.
The loan arrangement, which includes an option to buy, gives the striker an opportunity to establish himself at Ajax while the club assesses his long-term prospects.

Wolves spell fails to meet expectations
Arokodare’s move to Wolverhampton Wanderers was intended to represent another step forward after his impressive performances in Belgium.
However, his spell at Molineux proved difficult, with the forward struggling to find consistent goalscoring form as Wolves endured a challenging period.
The situation became more complicated following the club’s relegation from the Premier League, with Arokodare’s relationship with Wolves reportedly deteriorating.
His struggles in England contrasted with the promise he had shown during his time in Belgian football, where his performances had helped attract interest from clubs across Europe.
The move to Ajax therefore presents an opportunity for the Nigerian to regain momentum and demonstrate the qualities that made him an attractive signing in the first place.

Fresh start in Amsterdam
Since arriving at Ajax, Arokodare has begun rediscovering his goalscoring form, offering encouragement that a change of environment could help revive his career.
For the forward, the challenge extends beyond scoring goals. Ajax are seeking to restore their standing after disappointing seasons, and Arokodare has made clear that contributing to that recovery was central to his decision.
The club’s history, expectations and determination to return to the summit of Dutch football offer a different kind of challenge from the one he faced at Wolves.
If he can maintain his form and deliver consistently, the Nigerian could strengthen his case for a permanent move while helping Ajax progress towards their ambitions.
After a difficult chapter in England, Arokodare appears to have found a project that matches his own desire for a fresh start β and an opportunity to help one of European football’s most celebrated clubs return to the top.
